Honored with a 2003 National Heritage Foundation Fellowship from the National Endowments of the Arts for her role in creating and continuing to preserve "the acrobatic style swing dance, known as the Lindy Hop," Ms. Miller (at a young 89 years of age) continues to be an inspiration to all who know her. Ms. Miller's energy continues to amaze all who know her. She is currently working on her third and fourth books, Swing Baby Swing and Me & John Biffar; and has written several songs, including "The Big Apple," her valentine to her hometown of New York, which she composed and wrote with Frank Owens. Ms. Miller is also the subject of author and historian Al Governor's recently released children's book, "Stompin at the Savoy." Illustrated by Martin French, the book tells the story of her childhood in Harlem and takes readers to Paris, Rio, Hollywood as a teenage Norma travels the world dancing with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. Florida filmmaker John Biffar has recently completed a 72 minute documentary, "Queen of Swing" (view the trailer.) Narrated by Bill Cobbs, Queen of Swing takes an inside look at Norma Miller's influence in the globalization of America's jazz culture and her and her fellow artist's role in racial integration. The documentary features interviews with Bill Cosby, Bill Cobbs, Frankie Manning, Phoebe Jacobs and the late Leonard Reed. Norma continues to travel throughout the year, making appearances at a number of Swing Dance Festivals and Jazz Events around the world. In addition to teaching master classes, Norma also performed her comedy act and screened the recently released "Queen of Swing" documentary. In February 2007 Norma was in London for Goodnight Sweetheart 'GNSH' (she is planning to returm again in 2008.) In April 2007 Norma returned to Texas for the Dallas Dance Council's 11th Annual Dance for the Planet and in May she and producer/director John Biffar attended the the Focal International Awards in London, England (Biffar's "Queen of Swing" was nominated) before heading to Las Vegas, Nevada for National Tap Dance Day. In July Norma's tour schedule included Sweden's Herräng Dance Camp and Debbie Allen Dance Academy's Summer Intensive in Culver City, the Century Ballroom's Masters. Later in the month, Norma made her annual pilmgrimage to New Orleans for the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp, where she presented the school an instrument purchased with monies donated to Ms. Miller by the Oprah Winfrey Foundation. (John Biffar accompanied Norma on her 2005 visit and was fortunate to have documented many of the legendary Jazz venues which were later destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.) The first week of August found Norma once again at Camp Savoy in Surry, England and from there she returned to Seattle, Washington for Century Ballroom's Annual Masters of Lindy Hop. From Seattle, she fley to Detroit Michigan for Motor City Jam 2007. In September she returned to spend a few weeks in St. Paul for Collin Productions' Twin Cities Tribute to the Queen of Swing...A Salute to the Legends of Jazz, Tap and Swing, which included the Collins' Family Urban Garden Party, where Norma held court during during St. Paul's annual Selby Jazz Festival (where she made a special guest appearance.) After a few weeks of R & R back home in Fort Myers, Florida (where she found time to perform at several private shows where she drew lots of laughs with her new comedy routine) Norma was ready to return to her former home of Las Vegas for Dr. Prince Spencer's Birthday Party at the West Las Vegas Center for the Arts. Due to scheduling conflicts, Norma was not able to attend the Swing Dance USA Convention and Competition at the Historic Coliseum Ballroom this year...however...she is already planning to attend the 2008 event. Just before leaving Fort Myers, Norma was interviewed at Dreamtime Studios by a producer for the BBC who is gathering footage for an upcoming documentary on Ella Fitzgeral. Norma had the opportunity to work with Ella at the start of her career and shared several fond memories, including how Ella invented scatting while playing poker between shows Norma just happenned to be present for Ella's first performance at the Apollo AND for her last performance at Carnegie Hall.) In November, Norma traveled to Southern California for the US Open Swing Dance at the Anaheim Marriott and will again return to Key West, Florida for her annual Birthday Bash. After a restful holiday season, Norma will once again begin her active travel schedule returning to most all her favorite annual events!
